What is an Opioid?

An Opioid is a class of drugs that includes both natural and synthetic substances derived from the opium poppy plant. These drugs primarily act on the central nervous system by binding to opioid receptors in the brain, spinal cord, and other areas of the body, reducing the perception of pain. They can also cause intense euphoria or intense high that can lead to dependence or addiction, whether the drug ingested is heroin or a legally prescribed drug.

Opioid overdose effects include severe depression of the respiratory system, potentially causing respiratory arrest, coma, and death. Opioid dependence and withdrawals is characterized by constricted nausea, mental confusion, drowsiness, severe sweats and constipation.
